Galatians 6:7-8 (NASB20)
7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a person sows, this he will also reap.
8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will reap destruction from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit.
God is Calling Us to Multiply
As a church, we are stepping into something bigger than ourselves! We have been invited to partner with God in expanding His Kingdom by planting a new church in Richmond, KY. This is not just a project—it’s an opportunity to see the multiplication of the Kingdom at work in the Spirit!
Last week, we talked about the first seed God wants to multiply in us—His Word. Before God multiplies our resources, talents, or anointing, He first sows His Word into us. Why? Because it is His Word that brings transformation! When we receive it, it produces life change within us. It doesn’t just get us out of Hell and into Heaven; it transforms us by producing the fruit of Heaven in our earthly lives!
But today, we shift our focus. We know that God is a sower—but what about US?
What Are You Sowing?
Paul makes it clear in Galatians 6:7:
“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a person sows, this he will also reap.”
Paul warns us of our capacity to be deceived, or to stray from this truth. The unshakable truth is beautifully simple. Whatever you plant, you will harvest. If you plant tomato seeds, you’ll reap tomatoes. You don’t put tomato seeds into the ground and reap a pile of tomato seeds; you reap the fruit and the fruit CONTAINS the seeds! The fruit you reap contains multiplied seeds of what was originally sown.
God set this process into motion thousands of years ago! Whatever a person sows, they reap. It works in earthly life and in spiritual life. It’s a law of existence! This is why what we sow matters. If we sow negativity, jealousy, or selfishness, we may not see an immediate effect, but in time, we will harvest a multiplied return of what we planted. On the other hand, if we sow love, faithfulness, and generosity, our lives and the lives around us will reflect that harvest.
And what we receive in the form of the fruit of that seed may not look exactly like what we sowed, but the original seed is in there! As long as we continue to sow that seed, we will reap that fruit!
Sowing to the Flesh vs. Sowing to the Spirit
Paul warns us in Galatians 6:8:
“For the one who sows to his own flesh will reap destruction from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit.”
By default, our human nature leans toward sowing to the flesh—acting in selfishness, pride, and sin. But when we encounter Jesus, we gain the ability to sow differently—to SOW TO THE SPIRIT.
• Sowing to the flesh leads to brokenness—destructive habits, strained relationships, and regret.
• Sowing to the Spirit leads to eternal fruit—peace, joy, purpose, and transformation.
“Eternal” in this verse isn’t only speaking to life after death. It literally means “perpetuating.” Obviously that does apply to eternity in Heaven, but we aren’t just sowing for Heaven! There is still much life to be lived prior to Heaven (hopefully). Therefore, when we SOW TO THE SPIRIT, we are returning to the Lord of the harvest that which He so graciously gave us! When we put that seed into His hands, we are expressing our faith and trust in His ability to return unto us the measure of seed that HE THINKS we need, in the form of the fruit that we need!
So often, we hamstring our expectations of return and fruit to ONLY what and HOW MUCH we gave, or even how much we WANT in return! But we aren’t in charge of the harvest! The Lord is! He determines the quantity and quality of my fruit! By giving Him Lordship over my seed AND my harvest, I’m expressing deep faith in His ability to steward and grow what has been given!
From Curse to Blessing
We see this principle at work from the very beginning. When Adam and Eve disobeyed, they sowed mistrust and rebellion, and the consequence was a harvest of hardship, toil, and separation from God. God literally had to curse the very ground Adam would labor on.
But later, Noah chose a different path. Without Jesus in his heart; without the Holy Ghost to infill him, He sowed obedience, honor, and worship unto God. And because of this, God spoke a new word over his life that perpetuated to his generations and to us:
“While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Summer and winter, And day and night Shall not cease.” (Genesis 8:22)
Noah’s obedience enabled God to reverse the curse! The very ground that God had to curse, God was now able to BLESS because of Noah’s seed being sown to the Spirit instead of the flesh. Instead of hardship being the only outcome of his sowing, now God restored the possibility of fruitfulness, abundance, and blessing.
What Are You Sowing Today?
So let me ask you: What are you planting right now?
• Are you sowing love, trust, and faith into your marriage, or are you sowing seeds of neglect and resentment?
• Are you sowing generosity and faithfulness in your finances, or are you planting fear, greed, and selfishness?
• Are you sowing healing and encouragement into the lives of others, or are you spreading gossip and division?
Maybe you are harvesting the consequences of bad seeds that were planted in your life years ago—perhaps even by someone else. The good news is God can redeem it! Just as He did for Noah, God can speak a word over your life that undoes what the enemy has tried to destroy. That undoes the sins of others against you!
It’s time to start sowing differently.
What can you sow into the Spirit today? What might God be calling you to plant that will bring a harvest of life, restoration, and transformation?
The seed you plant today will shape the harvest of your tomorrow. Let’s choose to sow to the Spirit!
